About:

Horanadu the holy city of Chickmagalur district of Karnataka, is famous for the Annapoorneshwari Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Annapurneshwari, (Goddess of Food and Grains) this temple was built in 1973.

It is believed that one who visits the temple and takes the blessing of the Deity one shall never go hungry in their life. Annadana (free meals) is ritually provided by the temple organization 3 times a day. This is a form of Prasada (blessing) from the deity. Bheemeshwara Joshi is the present Dharmakartaru of Annapoorneshwari temple.

Horanadu lies amidst the scenic beauty of the Western Ghats, in the Malnad area. The nature’s bounty and green spread reflects on the Goddess’s resplendent glory. The main idol made of gold and the serenity in the face can bring peace and calm to ones mind. The Goddess Annapoorneshwari standing on a peeta with Shanku (shell), Chakra (the wheel or circle), Sri Chakra (Sacred Inscription- Circle of Life)and Devi Gayathri in her four hands.

Some of the piligrims enroute may be visited in the order of Kukke Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Sringeri, Udupi Krishna temple and Kollooru Mookaambike, Kalaseswara temple in Kalasa, and then the Horanaadu Annapoorneshwari temple.

History of Horanadu Temples:

It is believed that Lord Shiva was once was cursed and his curse was reversed when he accepted alms from Annapoorneshwari, a form of Goddess Parvati. The Goddesss is revered as Horanaadu Aadishaktiyatmaka Annapoorneshwari. Shri Bheemeshwara Joshi is the present Dharmakartaru (Religious Head) of Annapoorneshwari temple.

Enjoy Food :The name "Annapoorneshwari" means "Feeding one and all". The uniqueness of this temple is everybody who visit this temple are provided with food (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) and place to sleep in the temple premises.

Bhadra Wildlife Santuary: Bhadra Wildlife Santuary is located 38 km north-west of Chikmagalur town. The sanctuary surrounded by hills has the tributaries of the Bhadra river flowing through it. It is a great place to see Indian bison, elephants, ferocious tiger, panther, sambar, spotted deer, wild beer, porcupine, birds like the peacock, parrot, partridge, pigeon, etc. and reptiles such as cobra, python etc.

Baba Budan Giri: To the north of Chikmaglur town is the Baba Budan Range or Chandra Drona Parvatha as it was known in the ancient times, which has one of the highest mountain peaks between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris.
